I got this from my daddy's yard with a Hibiscus I dug up. It grows from a bulb, dies completely after blooming and blooms only once a year... any ideas?

It looks just like my crocasimia "Lucifer". I'm going to go out and get a pic right now

I do believe that is it! I did a search, and here its called Montbretia! Good to know-I have them in partial shade, so I should move it to sun and they will readily multiply! Good, the hummers like them, and it is "Hot Shot Red"!

I have some of those also. My mother had a flowerpot full of them over 20 years ago and didn't know where they came from, they just showed up and grew. She gave me some, and we could never find the name of them. Only mine are a hot hot pink color. Thanks for the name!

Update: I guess mine aren't the same flower, I looked them up and it didn't mention any hot pink varieties, and mine is definitely hot pink. Otherwise, it looks the same....Wish I'd taken a picture of mine when it bloomed.

The hummers really like them. I watched the little female tasting every single bloom the other evening

I also think it looks like Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'Lucifer' (Montbretia).

Rockybane, I don't know which area you live in, but your pink-flowered plant may be a Watsonia. Maybe one like these?:

My Crocosmia Lucifer are just starting to bud out. It was a new plant for me from a friend several years ago and I have really enjoyed it. LB

No, mine isn't a wastonia, I looked that up and mine looked nothing like that. My mom always thought it might be a peacock orchid, this was 20 years or so ago, when nobody around here had internet access, so we didn't have a quick way to look it up. I have looked at a peacock orchid since then, and it is definitely not that either.

Mine looks just like the picture on the first post, but it is hot pink, or deep pink. The flowers look like they are shaped the same, the blades are the same, just the color is different. The mystery remains.

This is a picture of my crocosmia (Lucifer). I think yours is the same thing.
