[font=Arial Black]Hello all! I hope someone out there can answer a few questions for me about lavender. My mum, who lived in Suffolk England, recently passed away. I have "inherited" her green thumb"(ok, well I have inherited the want to have her green thumb anyways! I live in Hawaii, and have started a garden of my own, and wanted to be able to plant some of her lavender from her garden.I was able to bring some clippings from her lavender(not exactly sure what type they are one is a very frangrent purple, the other is a white flower) and had them in water pretty much from the time I cut them til I planted them - approx 36 hours. I had about 30 or so small pieces about 2-3 inches long. Half I planted in soil without root hormone, and the other half I dipped in root hormone and planted in soil. I have been anxiously waiting to see if any of them will produce roots. So far only one of the clippings have stayed "green" the rest are shriveled - however I pulled one of the shriveled clippings and below the soil the plant still appeared to be alive as it was greenish. Also within the soil that they are planted in - I have one flat that isn't seperated into individual pots - about 1/2 dozen little green plants have appeared - the soil was "new" but I am not 100% positive that they are weeds as some of the lavender cuttings were in full bloom - I have absolutely no idea what a lavender seed looks like, or what a new seedling looks like. My questions are : Even if the cuttings appear to be dead, is this normal? (I know that some plants "die off" above the surface to help conserve "strength" so to speak, but can't find any information about lavenders in that area) I planted the cuttings on June 11, and the seedlings (whatever they are) started sprouting above the surface after 10 - 14 days, is this enough time for lavender seeds to grow? If so what do the baby seedlings look like? Obviously I am very concerned about these plants - my mum only died a month ago - which explains a lot of why. Any advice would be appriciated!! |

Take a cutting approx. 4-6 inches long, preferably after the plant is done flowering. Remove any leaves that would be below the water line (they will rot),add water and put the container indoors in a bright place near a window, but out of direct sunlight. You will see new roots appear in about 2 weeks. After the roots are approx. several inches long, move the little darling into a small pot with soilless medium and let it grow a bit. When the plant is about as large as the ones they sell at the garden center in the spring, plant it outside. I do hope this helps you some |

Thanks! I think miraculously I may have grown a half a dozen baby seedlings - the clipping still had flowers on some of them, so I think that some seeds fell off. Does anyone have any pictures of seeldings at about 3 weeks old? |
