Why did my Japanese Painted Fern die??

I now have three healthy big fronds and another one coming. I wonder what happened to kill all the original ones??

That old fern went and died again. Another one next to it is going as well. All the rest are fine. The sad ones are planted right under a big mock orange bush. What do you call it when a plant inhibits other plants from growing near it? Does mock orange do that?

Mine in the pot is beautiful. I have impaients around it. Hope to winter it over in the storage area. It will get very cold in that room, may be even freeze. It's in a beautiful colbolt blue pot that I would hate to lose. So I hope it will be ok. I would hate to take it out an desturbe it now this late in the season.

I thought the one I mentioned in this thread earlier was a goner after winter and I'd given up, but guess what! It's growing! It looked like it was uprooted and scraggly, but it's got quite a few fronds on it now.
