I am thinking about planting some herbs, but don't know if it is too late here on the southeast coast of Florida. Temps running in the 80's-90's with the heat index in the 100's. I have dappled shade areas that I was thinking about using to keep them a little cooler. Karen B |

I have several herbs in my garden and all are growing well. The only herb I have that needs shade is the culantro. Culantro can receive VERY little sun and must be kept moist. I have sweet basil, parsley, oregano, rosemary, and thyme all in full sun. Start seeds in shade or start inside and bring out for a few hours everyday. After about one month(once they've sprouted)..they should be ready to be planted outside. Of all the plants and trees I own..herbs have been the easiest to grow and care for. |

Oh..and cilantro seems to not like the hot sun as well. Mine didn't sprout.

Culantro is different from cilantro. I learned that from dame! I thought that she had just made a typo and learned that culantro is something else. Yes, it's way to hot for cilantro now. Thyme and basil might do, but I can't even get my chives to sprout now. It might just be me. |

I am also going to start some herbs and I am thinking the best way to go is containers, I live in SE GA and it is soooo humid and hot(in the 90's). I am hoping to pick the right herbs to get started. My Mom has already successfully planted basil, dill , and cilantro, so we will see.

if you want a 99% success rate go fer a mint BUT bewarned they can be pretty invasive!! (herbs do better during the summer then tomatoes an peppers SAME conditions so yea starting id typically suggest tomatoes an peppers but knowing that its herbs) |

I don't know if right now is the right time to do it in your area..but, that's because of the cold during winter..not the heat now. Keep them well watered early on..and you should be fine. I live in Miami, FL...so, I know about how hot and humid it can get. |
