I would like to know how to plant mexican sunflower seeds. I bought a packet of its seeds and planted them and until now nothing came up, not even one. are sunflower seeds choosy when it comes to soil? |

Do you mean Tithonia? It's not an actual "Sunflower"- Helianthus. I planted some for the first time this year and they have all come up. I forgot to write down the dates though I think they took about 2 weeks... I direct sowed mine. Some are in the shade, and others in full sun, with a couple of clumps in nasty clay "soil".

Eight years ago when I bought my house I planted 'mexican sunflower' seeds for my rock garden. I am still getting volunteers as they bloom and reseed themselves! Best investment I ever made! As for soil, my front yard tends to be rich, though at the time I had done nothing to improve it - I just direct sowed and they grew. Is the seed packet outdated? Maybe a little creature found the seeds and ate them - I'd try again - they grow pretty quickly. |
