I have finally had some success with a rose - Gertrude Jekyll 'Ausbord'. The rose is so fragrant. The bush has one or two branches that are growing tall - about 4' tall, but is not getting bushy. I do know that I should deadhead rose blooms that are finished, but should I top the branch to encourage bushier growth? Also wondering how to cut one of these blooms for indoors. The plant bears clusters on short stems. Can they be cut and do I need to cut to a 5 leaf stem? Thank you for any help. |

Hi! You do need to cut to a 5 leaf set, if you cut to a three leaf set, it will grow, but not a branch sturdy enought to bloom. You can cut back to a 5 leaf set further down the stem if you are using for a cut flower, just remove any leaves that will be in the water. Cutting it further back will give you a bushier plant. Hope this helps Sass |

And I'm not certain that cutting it smaller will give one a bushier plant.I'm guessing all the dieback is cut out/off and down to clean pith. Gabbysgarden, How old is this rose; what kind and can you post a pic? Kale

That's what I've been doing according to all my rose care guides. 30 happy roses. |
