Hi,
I'm Barb, and I am new to this terrific site. Also, planting flower seeds and buying flowers are all new to me! I live in an apartment, so I don't have a garden, but still love the beauty of flowers, plants, herbs, etc.! I just started so I hope I don't drive people crazy with silly questions! Because I do have some! Like...WHY does lavender, and, well...ALL types of flowers/wild flowers/herbs, have to be hung UP-SIDE down in a dry place? I understand the place needs to be dry, but why upside-down? Anyone? Thanks!!!!

I think that it was the way that it was done long ago. I've dried loads of thing, especially lavender straight up. I don't think that it makes a bit of difference--just traditional, the old-timey way.

Oh, and welcome to Garden Guides. Ask all the questions that you want. There is no such thing as a silly question. I ask them all the time!

I dried some basil in the oven and it worked very well. I laid them on a metal baking sheet and set the temp to b/w 100-150 degrees for 20 minutes. I'm going to try the same with my other herbs as well.

No, it didn't stick at all. I spread out the leaves so none of them were touching each other and put the oven at it's lowest setting. I forgot about it for quite a while and when I checked, they were all perfectly dried. I filled up a small spice jar with the crumbled bits.

Hmmm...now that I think of it...20 minutes is not enough time. I think it's at least an hour

I even pressed some one time in an old phone book. I just lined it with paper towels and put the leaves in and left it alone. When I checked them, they were perfectly dried, still had some color and were beautiful shapes, almost too pretty to use.
