I've been thinking about getting my father some zebra grass for Fathers Day. He's been talking about how he wants to plant a few around the yard. I was wondering which would be the better value. Should I either:

A) Buy it online from ebay. I was thinking ebay because he'd like a few plants and they're cheaper, so I could get a few and he could plant them wherever he wants. The down side is that these plants are tiny, usually cut down to 1' and so on.

OR

B) Buy a plant from a local store. I was thinking that it may be better to just buy a big plant and then divide into smaller pieces to spread around.

Which do you think would be more wise? Also... are there other good ornamental grasses that fair well in NJ, Zone 6b? :-)

Thanks!

I think maybe buying one at your local store for fathers day and then adding one at a time to his yard. If the plant is large enough you could divide in half. I live in zone 6b to, but I'm in Tn. I've had mine about 6 years now and it is about the size of a wash tub and it's around 7ft. tall. I really like the yellow strips in the blades.

I'd definitely use a local store!

A word of caution. Be careful which grass you buy, many grasses can get out of control. DON'T buy canary grass! (Phalaris arundinacea) It comes in a pretty varigated variety that many people just buy without researching. Several states have declared it a noxious weed! Just an FYI kinda thing.
