I'm new at planting Datura. I know there are many varieties. Can anyone offer tips in planting Daturas,i.e, soil ammendments, fertilizers, amount of sun, shade etc? I've planted 7 different Daturas, so far only 3 varieties are seeded.

Mine is in a large pot, full sun, regular potting soil. I fertilize every now and then-to me it is not a demanding plant, except for water-Likes to be watered often.

Hi Carolyn,
Hmmm, in a pot! Well, I will have to try that. Mine are all in ground. What variety of Datura do you have growing in a pot? Also, did you grow your Datura from seed in a pot? What kind of fertilizer do you use? Sorry for all the questions.

Not sure of what kind. It makes the ruffled, purple flower with white center. Picture of it is in my profile pics. It was growing in the ground, and made lots of seeds. I gave all the seeds away because it came back every spring, and it re-seeded everywhere, and don't you know, only ONE came back this year? That's why it's in a pot. I'm watching it carefully, and waiting for seeds. I fertilize with miracle gro-or similar ever few waterings.

Hi Carolyn,
Just saw your Datura, very pretty! Not sure of the name either. Thanks for the added info on the plant!

I have a Blackswirl Datura growing in partial shade that's doing nicely and last year I had a double yellow that was gorgeous...there's a pic in my profile. It's hot, hot, hot in SC. so some shade is helpful growing things here. Other than that, I lightly fertilize around all plants and in beds in Jan-or Feb and again in the late fall.

Hi Bizzy,
Thanks for your input. Your double yellow Dat is beautiful. Do you have a pic of your Blackswirl Datura? Would love to see it! What fertilizer do you use on your Daturas? Yeah, we are having hot hot weather here in New Orleans.

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as Carolyn's purple one, but we grew a Datura Metel, or Horn of Plenty flower, this year. It looks similar but larger, about seven feet tall. It's done well in the ground, no special attention at all other than regular water. I'll send seeds to anyone who wants some.

Carolyn -- I looked at your pictures and your garden is BEAUTIFUL!!

In the Ornamental Garden forum there is a sticky just for talking about Angel Trumpets (Brugmansia) and the Datura which makes seeds.

These are both such grand plants. Mine have been blooming for several weeks. I always have one plant that blooms better than another.

Enjoy the Brugs and Daturas Linda B
