Hi everyone! I'm completely, utterly brand new to gardening and can use all the help I can get! We just bought our first house and I've inherited a beautiful perennial bed. However, because of the timing of our move and the really weird cold spring we've had (I'm in the suburbs of chicago, zone 5) it doesn't look like they did any spring cleanup and I'm just now able to turn my attention to the garden. So far I'm fighting aphids on the honeysuckle and trying to figure out the other plants... so, any tips on what tasks to concentrate on? I'm not even sure I know what is a weed and what isn't! Can't wait to learn more - this is something I've always wanted to do!

Welcome to Garden Guides from an old hillbilly living in south central Kentucky. The first thing you can do with your new garden is relax and let it bloom. You can weed, water, and mulch and take out the plants you don't care for and make a plan for next year. We will still be here and ready to give help all year long. You have a great day and happy gardening. Bill Mitchell ![]() ![]() ![]()

Welcome fellow Illinoian! I am from the south of you in central Illinois, also zone 5. You have found the right place here. Check out all the forums and feel free to jump into any conversations. My suggestions for you new garden is .. 1st get rid of your aphids.. then watch your garden grow and see what is there. Some plants are late to come thru the soil and Illinois has certainly had a cool wet spring. My hardy hibiscus is just now coming thru the ground. If you get in there and dig around or walk on something it might not come up or might get injured in some way. So relax and enjoy, take notes about what you like/dislike. Identify your plants as they come up and put markers out. Take pictures so you will know where they are next spring. We look forward to getting to know you..

Welcome to GG from even farther north, up here in WI! (Yup, that's me, the idiot leaning waaaaaay out the window waving in the rain...) chatty beat me to it, but I'll second the opinion anyhow. Let everything grow for now, take tons of pictures, set your markers so you know where the keepers are next spring, (bulbs, especially) and make changes a year from now. We bought our house in November, with little or no yard cleanup done-- the folks we bought from had already moved 6 months previously, were looking to unload the place. Yardwork was not a priority for them, with two small children and dad working nights. So...lots of work a year and a half after we moved in, moving and dividing, and pruning, etc.etc. Have fun this summer, sit back and watch it grow for now. (Save your strength for next spring... )PS My aunt lives in Wilmette, and was telling me last week that everything in her garden (35+years there) is way far behind where it usually is this time of year. |
