I am hoping that someone can help me figure out what's eating my pole bean leaves and how to control them. I live in south-central Wisconsin and have a back-yard garden plot. Everything else is virtually untouched - except my pole bean plants. Some of the leaves look like an insect has been eating through them, and others have no leaves left. I don't know if part of the problem is rabbits, but part of it definitely seems to be insects. Does anyone have any recommendations about how to deter pests from these plants or have insight into what might be eating them? Thanks! |

Given your location, I would rule out any kind of beetle larvae, such as June beetles, Mexican bean beetles, or Japanese beetles. Too early just yet. That makes mammalian munchers more likely. Photos would be helpful. |

I had some pretty good results with a home-made brew recommended by the USDA: to make the concentrate: 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid 1 cup cooking oil To make the raedy to use spray: 4 teaspoons concentrate 1 pint of water I also added some garlic

Thank you for your replies! I haven't had a digital camera on hand, but finally found the culprits - Mexican bean beetles and I also now have stink bugs eating my squash leaves. I'll try that mixture that Aurora recommended - does anyone have any other tips to combat Mexican bean beetles and stink bugs? Thanks! |

You could try Murphy's oil soap. One capfull per gallon, on plant and saturate soil, once a week til pests are gone. It works on white flies i know for sure. And other bugs don't seem to like it either. good luck |
