I have two big, ugly and old Manitoba maples in my backyard (box elder). Nothing has grown under them and I am wondering if any of you have had the same trees and found plants that grow well under them. I would just cut them down but their is the city by-law that trees have to have a reason to be cut down. |

I have boxelders, none mature I don't let them. I have never tried to grow anything under them but I have a few suggestions. Have you tried hostas? They do great under trees. How about daylilies? They come in a large variety of colors and sizes. They multiply on there own, easy to transplant and make great "pass along plants" to friends and neighbors. Daylilies can be grown from seed, but it may take a while to get them to booming size that way. You would more likely find it easier to plant them already grown for $4-$17 a plant, or even free if you have friends or neighbors who would be willing to divide theirs and share with you. If you have deep shade around your trees you may want to try lily of the valley which also multiply on their own and bloom in spring. They have a pleasing odor for such a small flower. Be aware that these plants are toxic to pets and people! If you grow them make sure you don't have any pets or kids that will eat them. You also could try asiatic lilies and tulips. I have grown them around trees before but it all depends on what the conditions are. |
