My husband just planted our corn last night. he planted 4 rows of corn. 2 of a se variety and 2 of a sh2 variety. I'm looking at the seed packs now and see that they say not to plant these varieties within 250 ft or 3+ weeks maturity time together. well they're in rows next to eachother, rows 3 feet apart, and have the same maturity time. Anyone know what will happen? I'm scared that they may prevent eachother from pollinating or something funky since they say not to plant them the way we did. Please tell me I'll get edible corn despite our error! We just planted 500 seeds of corn. Yes, this is our first year planting corn. 1st year with a "real" garden instead of a few plants alongside the house. |

First of all, let me say this is not a crisis. The worst thing that could happen is that you'll not get the benefit of the years of breeding and cross breeding that resulted in the sugar-enhancement or the super sweet of the corn that you might have had it been isolated from each other. The corn will still be "good". Just not as good, perhaps, as it might have been. You may (or may not) notice a variation in "sweetness" across the four rows as the interaction should be most noticeable in the two adjacent rows and somewhat less affected in the outside rows. F. oh good. I was afraid that I might actually not get corn (worst case scenario). both varieties I planted are yellow&white mix. My uncle said I might end up with something like indian corn. he probably meant, not benefiting from the years of corn breeding as you said. when he said it though I thought of the yellow, black, and white cernals mixed together - which I think of for decorative use and have never known whether that was actually edible for humans. I guess it would be, but never seen anyone eat it. well, suffice it to say, I can't compare the corn from the 2 types and get a true opinion of which did better, now that we goofed. lol |
