This vine is growing across the street from me. At first glance it looks just like the Japanese honeysuckle that runs rampant here. But a closer look shows that the leaves are a little longer and pointier, have red veins, and are outlined with red. Any ideas? If it's something cool I'll dig it up to save it. I think it's just that when vines are newly emerging from the roots (whether they died back from frost or are coming up as root suckers) are shaped differently than the adult leaves. For example, look at the lowest leaves in the pictures--they're scalloped. On all the honeysuckle vines here (the invasive but sooooo seductively aromatic ones!) I see those same scalloped leaves, then the vines produce oval ones. I'm thinkin' it's just your run of the mill Japanese Honeysuckle. |

Those first lobed leaves are what have me thinking Japanese Honeysuckle as well. |

Ok I have a question, just HOW invasive is the Japanese honeysuckle? I mean likecrabgrass invasive or is it worth the pulling out to have the beautiful smell? One more ??? does it bloom all summer long? When I was a kid in Liverpool Tx we have some of the most WONDERFUL smelling honeysuckle that seemed to melike it lasted all summer. YES?? |
