I was given an aloe plant by friends last summer. It lived on my apartment balcony thorough the end of summer and inside over the winter. I just put it outside the other day and it frosted 2 nights later. Now it's leaves are curling into itself and i've cut several of them off. I don't know if this is happening because of the frost (we're on the 2nd story) or if it was the abrupt transition, or if I'm not watering it enough now thats it's outside in the warm weather. Is there any hope for this plant or should I scrap it?

I wish I could help! If it were mine, I'd bring it back inside and keep it just moist enough to keep the potting soil from drying out. They don't really need a lot of water. It may surprise you and come back. Plants can be pretty resilient

Aloes are frost-sensitive. Cut off any leaves that start looking mushy, and just give it a little water every couple weeks (now that it is losing a few leaves it needs less water and is easier to overwater). Hopefully it'll just lose a few leaves, but even if it dies back to a stub or even to the soil line in the pot don't give up--it may produce offsets from the main root. |

i do the same w/ my aloes...summer them outside. this spring it got absolutely soaked w/ all the rain we had early on and was basically the colour of a pickle! was mushy and looked awful and i thought it was a goner. i left it in partial sun and haven't watered it since...let weather decide! it's come back full bore...firm and green and lovely! there's always hope for an aloe from my experience...don't give up on it!! |
