OK, another question. How far can I cut them down??

1/2 the size they are currently?

I wouldn't shear them. How tall are they? Typically a drastic pruning should be carried out over several seasons. You'd cut 1/3 of the branches back 1/3 of the way one year, let it recover, and then do the same next year.

They are about 3 ft tall. And about 3 ft wide.

And where shall I start pruning them? not at the base? I have never done this before, so I am nervous.. I dont want to kill them

Oh, is that all? Some rhodies grow up to the second story around here!

They don't require pruning. You can snip out branches to open the shrub up and improve its appearance. It's supposed to help them bloom better, by letting more sunlight inside the bush. All I do is deadhead mine and cut off any branches that get in my way since it's along a path. Do you know how to deadhead it?

So prune the branch down 1/3 of the way, not 1/2, and/or cut out any branches you want to open the shrub up.
