We live in New Brunswick, Canada. For the past two years we've been trying to grow basil in the garden and on the deck. Does anyone out there know what specifics basil needs; full day sun? indirect sun? How much water? Do they like shade? Any particular soil requirements?

thanks everyone

Put the seeds in a pot and take them outside all day. Keep the soil moist, but not over-watered. Touching the soil with your finger will tell you if it needs water. If soil sticks..it's ok...if it's dry and powdery..it needs water.

If it gets cold at night, you should bring the plant inside.

Hi, I am new to this gardening thing. I have, surprisingly, been very successful in growing herbs and a new garden. But, I don't have a clue how to harvest these herbs. Basil for instance, do you pull the leaves off, o or cut the whole stem flowers and all? Could someone please advise me.

Thank you,

Basil is so prolific if you cut the growing tip it will immediately produce two new stems at the leaf axil just below the cut. It's like digging a hole - the more you take away, the bigger it gets! By late summer, my basils are like small shrubs, with woody stems and globes of leaves.

You shouldn't let basil flower. Keep clipping the stems as stereo said. Not till the very end of the season do you want it to flower. I let mine flower then so that I can harvest the seeds. You can even root the cuttings in water and create more plants.

The magic Michael More? Great expression, wolf!

Basil definitely loves sunshine. It loves heat too, and does pretty well in drought. Though much better with moderate amounts of water.

All Mediterranean herbs (Sage, rosemary, oregano, thyme, basil, etc) love-Love-LOOOOOOOVE alkaline soil, heat, sunshine, and very little fertilizer. That's the kind of soil they developed in over thousands of years so that's what they're happiest with.

All herbs you should cut when they begin to flower. Basil is no different but if u want some right now for food, pull the leaves at the bottom of the plant.
