I have a purple wren that built her nest in my hanging fern on my porch. I dont know how to water it with out getting the nest wet. It needs water now. I tried to water it with a wateringcan with a thin spout but it just ran through along the sides. She is very tolerant of us on the porch but I don't want to scare her from the nest. Any ideas?

Might work. She has 5 eggs now. Daddy sings on my porch all evening.

If there are only eggs right now? I might try taking the plant down. Giving it a good watering under the nest and then hang it back up. Chances are the parents would holler but not abandon the nest.

A friend was having her porch painted and the painters took down her ferns. One had a nest and the parents went crazy. She finally told the painters to hurry and paint that area so they could hang the plant back up. They did and the birds went on to raise a happy family. Linda B

I have had this happen several times with our Carolina wrens. They like us and they love our porch. I actually removed the nest from the plant and placed it in a small terra cotta pot and then set it in a safe place on the porch. Sure enough, the parents returned to the nest and raised a happy family. I don't know if this would always work ~ these wrens are here year around and they are pretty used to the two of us.

I found gel vacation waterers at our farm store. They are to last 2 weeks or more. I soaked it good, then put them in today. Hope it works. Last year I lost the fern because I was afraid to water. She is very tolerant of us but the eggs haven't hatched yet. Last year if I sat at the far end of the porch, dad would sit by the fern and watch me. I'm sure it's the same pair. Wish there was a way to know for sure. I'm on vacation next week and I hope to get pictures of them.
