Hmm.

When I ordered my Butterfly Bush and Hardy Hibiscus seeds -- the seller sent some free Passion Flower seeds.

I thought I would give them a try and I sowed them on May 6th along with the others.

I have been doing some research... and found out:

1. Passion Flower seeds could take UP TO ONE YEAR to germinate.
2. Passion Flower grown from seed has a low success rate (and I'm a noob)
3. Passion Flower grown from seed is unlikely to produce flowers for between 10-20 years.

Is this true??

If so... I have to admit, my limited patience can only be stretched so far.

I have no interest in coddling seeds that might take an entire year to germinate -- which will then produce plants that won't even flower.

MM??? Passionflower here (vine) is sometimes called Maypops because their seed pods 'pop' and send seed flying. And they reseed pretty readily. I've just rescued one such vine from my Honey's porch that someone gave him 5 years ago. It's barely hanging on. The giver started it from seed, and it started blooming about 3 years ago-Would probably have done better if HE WOULD HAVE WATERED IT! I'd plant them along a fence somewhere and leave them alone. They're kind of like morning glories-they take care of themselves.

I've heard they don't germinate well. I have 10 seeds I planted a month ago, but no sprouts yet. I sure do hope they don't take a year !!

Mine were only planted on the 6th... so I'm keeping an eye on them -- but if the rest are germinated and growing and I start moving them to pots... once I'm satisfied with my "crop" I might discard the Passion Flower seeds...

I wouldn't have the patience for them either!

Has anyone had any luck with their germination yet? I was really interested in buying some passion seeds. I think they're really beautiful and would love to have them grow on my fence. So, has anyone had any luck yet in germinating them?

Out of the 10 seeds I planted late April, 1 germinated about a week and a half ago.

Congrats!!!

I've been thinking about buying some seeds online, but there seems to be huge discrepancies as to which zones the various passion vines can survive. Considering that I'm in zone 6b, I'm not sure which will is best suited. Some sites say some things and others conflict it. Maybe if I do get the seeds, I'll start them off in a pot and over-winter them indoors so that they'll be stronger for next spring... especially considering how late into the season we are.

Please keep me posted as to how your newly germinated vine fares.

THANKS

None of mine germinated -- I had to leave town for 10 days and I had also planted hibiscus seeds... some had germinated, but the seedlings did not make it through my absense. They have all become compost now in the great gardening circle of life, lol

Can these be bought as plants online?
