What's the dealio on planting roses?

Some of the rose catalogs have stopped shipping bareroot roses, and I am considering adding one to my garden this year - I know locally the nurseries will have them until late summer, so is it too late to plant? Why? One catalog has a final ship date of 6/30 - and I know I've planted a rose late in the year but guess what, it died! SOOOO, can I plant in May or not? I'm zone 5 and it is still not consistently above 60F during the day.

the bareroot roses are sent early in the season while the are dormant and should be planted before the start to spout. The root system because the soil had been washed away needs time to get jump started again and grow so it is well established by Fall so it has a good defense of withstanding Winter. The mail order companies (good ones) will set their shipping deadlines according to zone. This is to give the gardener, the rose, and themselves protection, cut down on complaints and returns, and insure a happy customer. Zone 5 will have an earlier cut of date for shipping than zone 7 or 8. Planting a bare root rose or even a container rose too late in the season just spells doom for your rose, it's root system and growth are just not strong enough to withstand a zone 5 winter. Especially like the one we just had. 120 inches of snow, 60 below windchills. Plant up until the middle of June, no later if it can be avoided, and give the roses a little extra care. Hope this helps Sass |

Now if I get a rose late in the season and pot it up on a container, winter it over in the basement (it won't freeze) and then try it out in the ground the next year, will that do? Or do I just need to get off my duff and find the rose I want now? I have looked at one nursery and just didn't see what I wanted. Not to say I KNOW what I want yet!!! |

pot it and over winter it will be good. Finding the right rose is rather difficult. I just ordered 5 more. Are you looking for something specific? I always choose for fragrance. This includes my "memorial" roses for people we have lost. Audrey Wilcox for my mother in law Audrey, Pope John Paul for my dad, Tahitian sunset and Tequila sunrise for my brother. Color next I prefer pink or red roses, but have peach, orange, 1 lavander, and white. |

I have a Honey Dijon which I love - mustardy color. I want a Leonidas because it was in my wedding bouquet, but I don't think it is particularly hardy?? I'd like a deep red rose - hybrid tea or grandiflora (that's the cross between a tea and floribunda, isn't it??). I would also like a cream-colored rose - don't have much room for more because of sun restrictions. I also have a climber with the word Polish in it - can't remember the full name...profusion of pink! I like the Tahitian Sunset too - is it hardy? One of the catalogs has a sale if you buy Mister Lincoln and Tahitian Sunset - I might take them up on it!! |

All I did with my Tahatian was bury it in leaves this winter and it came back just fine. I also like the Mr lincoln rose. |

Well, Sass I did it - shouldn't have, but I did - ordered the pair, Mr Lincoln and Tahitian Sunset - can't wait and hope they have enough time this year to establish, as I don't want to put them in pots - it will depend on how quickly they ship. Now I need (want ) a cream-colored rose...but don't know where I'd put it... Thanks again for all the info!

Good for you! it should have plenty of time to establish as long as it gets in the ground by the middle of June. They are both beautiful roses. Sass |

I'm in zone 5 as well and planted both my roses - Top Notch and Ink Spots a week after Mother's day. They took fine and right now we have cool weather which should be even better for you. I've heard good things about the roses you ordered. Hope you enjoy them for a loooong time! |

Have not gotten them yet, but it's been cool here anyway, so they are probably waiting for a bit warmer weather.... |
