I want to keep working outside in the garden and am trying to think of ways I can accomplish it. It is hard because I have a hard time getting up and down.Plus short of breath, etc.. I have found that one of those pastic light weight lawn chairs is my best friend. I can drag it around with me and by holding onto it I can pull myself up on the chair and then to standing. I can do a little section of the yard at a time and choose a certain project for the day. I am trying to get a shade garden going good. I read that they are low maintenance once they get going. I am planting Hosta and ground covers to help keep the weeds in tow. (most of our yard is in the shade) I appreciate any good ideas. Plus any good suggestions for tools that work to make gardening easier. Thank you. MeToo |

My most used tool is a handheld cultivator. Not one of those flimsy ones- it is made from thick steel, with a short, strong wood handle. One side of it is 3-tines, the other is a solid flat piece of metal. With it I can dig in just about any type of soil with little work, and it tackles hard roots nicely. I believe I bought it at Home Depot... I don't like long-handled tools, they tire me too quickly. My other best friend while working in the garden is a rocking garden stool. It's light weight, has a rounded base, and adjustable height seat. It will rock easily in the direction you are leaning, doesn't compress the soil very much or leave little "holes", fits easily in any tight spot, and is very easy to carry. Hope that helps! |

MeToo - you might want to post a question on tools in the 'TOOLS' heading - more poeple with good ideas may see it. I sympathize with you on being limited to getting around in the garden - I have bad disks and have to be careful - put myself out for 4 months last year weeding the patio pavers. Am doing fine now but have to do my exercises regularly and have to limit my projects to small 'doable' things. I always want to do more, more more!! Get some windchimes and a comfortable chair and just sit in the shade and enjoy the wind in the leaves sometimes too! That's what my DH always tells me to do!! |

We also have a Gardening with Disabilities thread stickied in this forum. Some good info there. |
