I'm in zone 5 and trying to soften my landscape - right now am focusing on vertical structures. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can plant on an arbor in full sun? It's not even summer yet and the sun in this area is very hot and it gets morning, afternoon AND evening sun. I really would love to plant roses - saw a new one called Candyland that will look fantastic with my Jackmanii clematis but I don't think either will tolerate this sun. Any suggestions would be a huge help! Thanks in advance for advice.

Lots of things love sun, would just need to be watered EXTREMELY frequently with what you describe. I'd go for the rose myself - I think annuals would wilt too readily. Of course there are lots of other herbaceous perennial vines, but I"m for the rose.

Compost and LOTS of mulch will help a LOT too. What you can do too is...

1)work some compost into your soil
2)plant your plants
3)lay down a soaker hose winding thru the area
4)now lay down 4 to 6 inches of mulch on TOP of the hose

This way when you water you are getting maximum use of your water.

Now, do you have a support for anything vining to grow up on?

Trumpet vines will grow under your conditions and can be very pretty. But do beware, they need STURDY support and can be invasive.

You might also check out bittersweet. I am not sure about their specific needs but I see it growing wild in our zone 5 forest areas.

I also have a varigated porcelain berry vine that is very pretty and is in very similar conditions but this one too need sturdy support.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. They are all great. Yes, I do have an arbor and am encouraged now to grow the climbing roses. The soaker hose idea is great not just for this project but for all my 'full sun' plants! Now why didn't I think of that Last year I worked a good amount of compost into the soil which I bought from Lowe's but unfortunately with it came a host of japanese beetles - the grubs of which I'm fighting right now. Anyway, thanks again. (I also saw a very dark purple 'Night Owl' climbing rose that would pair beautifully with the pink & white Candyland!)
