OK, I'm going to bite the bullet this year and actually buy a chemical to kill the ticks in the yard. I have had to remove far too many of them off of the kids so far this year- and they just play on the tire swings in the front yard. I apparantly missed one on Megan- it was HUGE!!! when I found it and removed it this morning.
Does anybody know of anything that kills ticks without being too harmful to other insects? Even better would be something organic or targeting directly at ticks

In my experience trying to keep ticks off pets, nothing but a good chemical does the trick. There are some plant-based human topical repellants, but don't know how well they work. As for the yard, I tend to avoid chemicals but ticks - they're like armored tanks!

I haven't had any problems with ticks on the dogs- I use Advantix on them. The kids are too young to be putting deet on them.
I'm like you, I don't normally use chemicals of any type in the yard, but this problem is way too out of control, and the health implications...

Hi I use deep woods of only on their cloths/socks never on the skin and it seems
to work. Also there are some natural products that work. I can't remember the name. Chickens work too that's what my friend has.

Thanks plantnative! I'll try doing that for them.
I've heard the same thing with the chickens- unfortunately I have 2 dogs that would just love to kill them

I found this online: Use an insect repellent containing permethrin on your clothing.

Also, beneficial nematodes will supposedly kill tick larvae in the ground but won't work on existing ticks.

Diatomaceous earth in combination with Rotenone-Pyrethrins Spray is another option

I have never tried any of these methods, but found them using Google and figured I would pass along.

I believe that they now have children's deet that is safe. Just think of the alternative. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Lyme's disease. I think I'd use the deet!
