Hello to all! I am just getting more comfortable with gardening, as I have been researching online and magazines for months now! I have attached a few pictures so that you all can see what i'm dealing with here.... We moved into this new construction house about 2 years ago, and have finished a few projects here and there. We are far from done, but i think that we have done our best thus far! The builder didn't sod all the way back to our fence, which has left around 8 feet of area which is half shade for the day (especially since all of the tree's in the back have grown leaves). We have started a veggie garden, only becuase we didn't really know what else to do back there! As new neighbors have moved in around us, we have realized we want more privacy other than just the fence to keep our dog inside the yard! We are in process of drawing out a plan for the fence that would include a scalloped border of color, tree's for some more privacy... We completed our small waterfall/pond tier only because the hill the builder left us with did nothing but ended up washing out into the yard. (There are pictures) The other pictures are taken from our deck... which you all can see that all of our neighbors can see us.. and we can see them! I look forward to getting to know you all, and really looking forward to learning from all of you!!! Thanks again, and any suggestions that you might help will be very helpful at this point!!! WOW I don't think you need much help. Beautiful landscaping. If that one area gets a lot of shade, do plant Ferns and Hostas. They are beautiful for months on end.Good Luck and you might like to post your question down in the Landscaping Forum for more activity. Linda B |

Hi from NY! You have a wonderful spot there despite the views into the neighbors yards...I just love the waterfall garden - nice way to make good out of something not so good! As for a 'living fence' I'd check with local nurseries to see what would work in your area - what I might suggest from the cold north might not work...Happy planting! |

Hello, and welcome from Indiana! I too am new to the site and have enjoyed it already. You have a beautiful backyard. Maybe the back would be a good place for a fire pit and chairs, surrounded with lots of hostas and ferns. Plus there are a lot of spring-blooming bulbs that you could add there, because the leaves would be gone from those trees and it would brighten it up back there in the early spring. Enjoyed your pictures! |

Hi, Welcome to GG. I am also building a shade garden for a "dead" spot in my yard. Obviously, everyone hit the nail on the head with the ferns and hostas. They will thrive where most others will fail. For some color, add lots of astilbe, they should have no problems in partial shade in zone 8. They have feathery blooms that come in shades from white to pink to fuschia. They flower from June to August and can range in height from 6 inches up to 5 feet! Not sure if you can still pick it up, but look for the Spring 2008 "Perennials" Special Edition Issue from Better Homes & Gardens. I got mine at Home Depot by the register. The article "Love Affair with Astilbe" has info on different varieties, as well as beautiful landscaping examples using it with lots of ferns and hostas. For short flowering plants, I'm using foxglove, bellflower and mixed begonias for a punch of color. Do a search on this site for "shade garden", it will link you to a list of plants, look up each to see what can grow in your zone. Sorry to be so long-winded...I hope this helps! |
