Hi, my name is Sunni and this is actually my first post! Please forgive me and point me in the right direction if I am posting this in the wrong place... I love verbena but evidently, they are not loving me too much. About a month ago, I purchased 2 hanging baskets of purple verbena at a local store. Unfortunately, I do not know the precise type of verbena. It draped beautifully over the pots' sides and apeared to be thriving. Brought home, hung them up on front porch area where they receieved plenty of sun. Watered regularly. Temps have averaged upper 60's to mid 70's, however, we have had some upper 80's and even some highs in only the 50's. After about 2wks, the plants started to look bothered and continued to look worse and worse. I noticed that the roots were very tight and thought the problem might be that they had gotten root bound. So, I moved them about a week ago into slightly larger concrete pots at the bottom of my entrance steps. Again they receive sun for the majority of the day with the exception of a couple evening hours. They still look pitiful...in the center of the plant, all of the leaves look brown and wilted although toward the ends of each branch most still appear green, healthy and producing quite a bit of blooms. Its just that the center area looks so bad....anyone have any idea whats going on and/or what I need to do? As I said, this is my first post, if I have left out any detail you might need to offer advice, please don't hesistate to ask..... Thanks in advance! |

Hmmm- I have verbena in my full sun garden and it's doing fine. I live in Zone 7b and the summers here get HOT! SO I don't think that being in the sun is bothering them. Mine also stayed evrgreen all winter, so I don't think the temps dipping down are the problem either. I'd try pruning off the brown stems, it may be that it was getting too "crowded". Were the roots a nice, healthy white when you repotted it? It may also be suffering from some root rot if they weren't. I'd try letting the soil dry out a little bit before watering it. I have found that often times plants in those plastic hanging baskets have some root rot and are very potbound. Hope this helps, and good luck with it! Please post updates

Sounds like root rot or overwatering to me. Maybe it's the plastic pot or that dadblasted potting soil everyone complained about last year. It stays TOO moist. |
