CONCERNING FAN SHAPED COCKSCOMB,BURGUNDY AND PINK . EVERYTIME I HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT IT, I AM ALWAYS TOLD IT IS AN ANNUAL AND CAN'T GET IT. BUT IN THE COUNTRY WHERE I GREW UP, MY GRANDMOTHER AND LOTS OF OTHERS NEVER PLANTED A SEED. IT JUST KEPT COMING BACK FAITHFULLY EVERY YR AS THE SEEDS JUST DROPPED OFF IN THE FALL.I FINALLY WENT BACK TO MY HOMETOWN AND ASKED A LADY WITH WHOM I SAW IT IN HER YARD IF I COULD HAVE A PLANT AS IT BEGAN SEEDING. GUESS WHAT! MINE NOW COMES BACK EVERY YEAR! AND LOTS OF OTHERS IN MY TOWN HAVE ACTUALLY STOPPED AND ASKED WHAT THAT BEAUTIFUL FLOWER WAS! DOES ANYONE ELSE KNOW WHAT KIND I'M SPEAKING OF OR REMEMBER BEING RAISE UP WITH IT? |

Gosh Terrimae, I have no idea about that.. but if you want it to be identified for sure, you might want to take some to the local home extention office.. it might have a totally different name than you think. It sounds like it might reseed itself from year to year.. still and annual, but a reseeding one

I have cockscomb come up every year in my flower bed (and anywhere the wind blows em)from 2 plants a friend of mine gave me. They reseed themselves readily, as they start to die, you can shake them, and there are tiny, tiny black seeds that fall everywhere-smaller than a black pepper flake. Thin them, and they will grow bigggggggg! Leave them clustered together and they are still pretty, just don't get big. |

Welcome to GG! If those Cockscome are so pretty I may ask for some seed this fall

I've seen cockscomb for sale with the other annuals in my area for a few years now, but I don't remember seeing it before then. I like them too, they are unusual. |

Can anyone post a pic when they are in bloom? |

Mine are coming up now. I'll take pictures when they start to bloom. Last year I had one that the flower head must have been 8 inches across. When my son comes in before heading to California, I'll have him show me how to make the camera and the computer work together (not too smart about that!) That will be around mid June and they should be starting to bloom by that time. |

They reseed for me too. I planted seeds once and they come back every year by the seeds that fall to the ground. Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

Char, I've never seen cockscomb like that. They're gorgeous -- what kind are they? The ones I'm used to are the celosia type. (see http://www.gardenguides.com/plants/info/flowers/an nuals/celosia.asp) the foliage on the ones I planted this year even have burgandy foliage. They're about to bloom, so I'll try to remember to post pix then. |

Please do post pix, Ozma. For some reason I haven't had any luck with mine for the last two years. They just seem to burn up in the heat. Daughter gave me a six-pack on Mother's Day, and they didn't last two weeks. They weren't all planted in the same area, but everyone of them gave up the ghost at the same time. Perhaps I should start from seed and not already grown? |
