...to root my butterfly bush and brugmansia. Wish me luck!
I've put the cuttings into a jar of water that I have in bright indirect light outside on my porch.
Boy I hope these take, especially the brug

I don't know how well the butterfly bush does in water, but I know they are easy to do in moist, warm soil.

Thanks
I'm going to try layering the buterfly bush as well. There's a stem that's close enough, and bendy enough, to reach the ground.

Update!
My brugmansia cutting is growing roots like crazy all up and down the stem that's in water
The butterfly bush cuttings are holding their own, but no real good roots yet. I think I'll take some more more cuttings and plant them in pots...
The obedient plant stems that Marley broke off are also rooting really well. They are even sending up flower buds

That's great! I think that you'll have better luck with the BB's in soil.

OK, I have a butterfly bush that had a long stem. When I saw this I layered it to see how it would go. My question is this, How long do I let it go before cutting it off the mother plant? How do I know it has roots with out risking damaging the roots that may be starting?

Mamabear- I personally wouldn't cut it off from the mother plant until I could see roots growing in the moss through the plastic wrap.
I'm going to try it when we get back from vacation at the end of June. I have some trees I want to try it with as well.

Witt- I'm going to transfer the BB cuttings to soil after we get back from vacation. They're probably better off in the water until then I'm going to plant the brug cutting then too.

I almost can't wait until fall when I have to cut the brugs to the ground- I'm going to grow LOTS of starts over the winter

edited to add: What i was talking about in my first paragraph is AIR-LAYERING, which is different from LAYERING in that the new plant isn't rooted in the ground, but directly at the branch.
I don't think I explained that very well

I re-read the posts and I think I misunderstood you Mamabear, sorry.
From what little I know of LAYERING- I'd wait until I saw good, strong, upward new growth from the point where the stem is in contact with the ground before cutting it from the mother plant.
