Hi all
I am about 30 days from retirement (!) and I am hoping to get more into gardening and landscaping. I live in WI so I am interested in suggestions from veteran iceberg folks. I am most interested in growing herbs - I love to cook and promised my wife elegant dinners - she wants to continue working - so it seems logical to grow my own. I am also interested in using containers to grow some herbs.

Soooooooooooooo any help you may be able to offer.......

Thanks

Welcome Nick ~ from a former WI Zone 5a, transplanted to KY Z6b. Since I gardened in WI for 25 years, I still know a thing or two.
You will do fine with herbs, in containers or not as you choose. I always had an herb garden outside my kitchen with annuals like dill, basil, parsley, and perennials like chives, thyme and tarragon. All of these are very easy to grow.
Congratulations on your impending retirement!!

Welcome, welcome! You'll love it here. It's great fun and very informative. I learn 3 or 4 things everyday!
Let's give a YAY! for retirement. It's great! I've had a ball since I retired.
Another YAY! for herbs. I'm an herb nut, too! I'm an eclectic gardener. I just have fun and I know that you will have fun here too. Wander around and find yourself some interesing spots to post comments, questions, and pictures.

Welcome to GG...Waving a hand from Michigan. Hubby dosen't like me to cook with herbs, so the only herb in my garden is chives and they are for the beutiful purple flowers. Good luck anyway, there are a lot of people here that do the same as you.

Welcome to GG from elsewhere in WI, Nick! I'm just southeast of Madison, in a little burg called McFarland. Great to see you here, check out the container section of the forums (scroll down a bit) if you haven't already found it, and dig right in! We rented for 7 years when we moved back to WI, and I grew just about everything you could grow in containers...well, OK I never tried watermelons or any other viney crops, and corn was out of the picture as well, but we tried out everything else on that little front stoop. Thanks for joining us here, and let us know how those herbs progress!

Welcome newbienick! I am a southern neighbor.. central Illinois. You live in a pretty state up there

Herbs are pretty easy to grow.. let me caution you on mint tho.. as long as it stays in the container it will be fine.. if it touches the ground it is off and running and you will find it everywhere! LOL I learned that the hard way. There are many different kinds of mints and basils, you should have a ball!

Congratulations on retirement!

Welcome Nick. Congratulations on your retirement. I haven't tried to grow any herbs yet but I love the idea of adding chives to my garden for the flowers. Keep us posted on the herbs and the cooking. There is also a forum with recipes and there are some good ones. Enjoy yourself. Happy Gardening!

Welcome Newbienick, from down here in Australia. Used to have a very extensive collection of herbs grown only in pots, on a balcony. As we are in a subtropical climate many herbs were perennial such as basil, oregano, marjoram, but had difficulty with cold temperate zone herbs such as chervil & the mints. All herbs grow well in containers so happy gardening & cooking. Enjoy yourself & you will find plenty of sound advice here.
