I have done a little gardening over the years I can't say that I am great but I don't usually have too much trouble. We just moved to a place with lots of weeds and rocks. I was thinking about making some small flower beds but didn't want to spray weed killer. I was thinking about putting some newspaper down and then some good soil over the newspaper and planting my seeds and then until the seeds sprout put more newspaper over the seed so the birds don't eat all of my seed. To me this sounds like it would work, but I have never done much with seeds or such rocky soil. The seeds are just some wildflower mix but I want it to be very full and healthy. Please help in southern missouri |

Welcome to GG...Waving a hand from Michigan. Maybe if you post your question in the "growing from seed" thread more people will see your questions

Welcome to Garden Guides. I don't know if I would put newspapers on top of the seeds. I'd just scratch them in and keep them watered. |

Instead of chemical weed killer you can use a strong mixture of vinegar and water (it is not selective and will kill all it touches) however, it does not permanently kill-but will kill where you want to put your newspaper down so the weeds will not poke through. I, too, am a strong advocate of using newspaper to keep out weeds. Just put mulch over it! |
