Hi there. Glad to find an active garden board.

I live in extreme north GA on the TN border. This is my first year trying a veggie garden, so we'll see how this adventure goes.

I've been working on my flower garden for awhile now. But have been bad and let it go. So this year is going to be pretty busy with trying to clean it all up and redo my pond area. Along with the new veggie garden.

My poor hubby is a lawn man. He loves the look of sod and cant understand why I prefer the country garden look. So we've come to a compromise. I'll only grow things up against the house and under the trees in the front yard so he has a LAWN. But in the back yard I'm free to go crazy. LOL, so thus starts our adventure.

My style is very eclectic. I love the feel of a cottage garden. So I've been adding lots of foxglove, hollyhocks, poppies, and lily of the valley to my already existing roses, azaleas, canna lilies, irisis, etc. My 10 yr old daughter is crazy over fairies so we are adding things that are pleasing to the fairies ;o) She has been building little fairy yards out of sticks and things and hopes to add some of the pretty little fairy figures soon.

We LOVE to watch the birds too. So we are constantly keeping the birds in mind when we plant. We have tons of activity in the yard from the hundreds of birds we get each day. I'm hoping to grow some more sunflower and millet too since the birds grocery bill is nearly as much as our grocery bill. :o)

Ummmm, Let's see what else... I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. The dogs like to help us dig in the garden. I homeschool my daughter. So she can tell you most of the names and conditions of the birds and flowers around ;o) We can turn anything into a learning experience. ;o)

I'm working on adding some pictures to an album. I'll learn how it works here soon, I hope.

Nice to meet everyone. Can't wait to jump right in!

Welcome to GG from WI, Starla! I took a look at your photos in your profile, and love the idea of the running shoe planters...what an excellent use for those old shoes! Your daughter is truly lucky, getting to grow up in such an imaginative, creative and knowledgeable environment. When my son was little, we were renting, and I didn't have much room to grow much, except for the front stoop, where grew everything I could manage I'm hoping both of our children grow up to appreciate their surroundings, looks like you've got an excellent start!
Thanks for joining us, feel free to dig 'round, post pics/comments, have fun!

Wow, you guys sure know how to make a gal feel welcomed! :o) Thanks for all the welcomes.

The funny thing about the shoe planter is... it was an accidnet. I left my shoe in the yard after gardening. The shoes were covered in clay so they stayed put. We had a storm that lasted for nearly 2 weeks. Heavy heavy rains and flooding. When I was finally able to get back outside I found that my newly planted hen and checks had been uprooted and were stuck in the clay on my shoes soooooooooooo they were stuck in the ruined shoes and have been happy ever since. ;o)

As for my zone. I'm actually in 7A although that seems odd that someone in the corner of the triangle would be different than me , hmmm.

It's been raining all weekend so hopefully that will encourage my garden to grow. I'm so excited to have an actual veggie garden this year!

I will be adding more pictures to my album. I have a ton to share. They seem to load slowly for me here though. I have most of them on Photobucket though. So if there's a way to import them here from there, then please share.

I lost a ton of my garden pics from last year (and previous years) though. I had them at imagestation before it closed. I wasn't worried about it though since I still had them on my computer. Well, last month my computer crashed, hard drive was fried and computer was a paper weight dead :o( So now that I have a new laptop I'm trying to gather as many of my pics as I can again.

Looking forward to sharing pictures and information with you all!

~Starla~

Welcome. I am the Mom of an 11 yearl old boy that loves to garden with me. He even has his OWN garden that he has full control over. He plants, weeds, harvests, everything. He would probably even like to be a penpal with your daughter if she has any questions that she might prefer to ask somebody her own age.

Welcome Starla, from another (not so close) neighbor. Though, I do travel to Chattanooga a time or two each year. Love the shoes! Your little girl reminds me of what my little girl looked like when she was ten. My little girl is now 35.
