Hello, Everybody!
I live in South Florida and I have grown violets for quite a while, always indoors. I have been very lucky with my plants, getting many compliments for the beautiful flowers. However, three months ago I decided to start planting out in my backyard; since then, I am having an arm to arm/wings/antennas fight will all sort of creatures that are treating my yard as their personal salad bar! I found this site and all the helpful information and decided to join. I am looking forward to learn a lot about how to keep my outdoor plants alive.

Welcome!
To control the bugs, I bought mantis egg cases 4 yrs ago. I still have a very healthy population of mantises. (This year I found 6 egg cases, and have already seen one baby mantis!) They really do a pretty good job. You can also buy Lacewings and a few other predatory bugs to help.
As for the birds and other furry critters I really can't help you, I have dogs that do a great job of keeping everything away from my beds
If it's a veggie garden, try putting up a poultry fence, with some of it layed out over the ground and buried a bit to keep the bunnies out. As for the feathered friends, maybe provide lots of feeders for them to eat from so they leave your stuff alone. Moles, voles, and squirrels I have no idea

Cute name, Bugsoff. I'm sure there are lots of people to help you. Just find the appropriate area and ask all the questions that you want to. It's loads of fun here.
Oh, my signature line on my email is
Help stamp out mole hills.
I have quite a few battles around here as well, but it doesn't deter me from trying!!
Have fun!

Welcome to GG from WI, bugsoff! We lived just south of you in Plantation, FL from 1990-1997. I worked at both the Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, and the Fashion Mall in Pompano Beach. Good to know someone down there still grows things! Thanks for joining us here, feel free to dig 'round some, and have fun!

PS I'd offer help on the bug issue, but we lived in a third floor condo, only had to deal with the occasional gecko , and the cats would usually "take care" of them...

Welcome bugsoff. I just wanted to point you to the pests tab at the top of the page next to the community tab. You might find some information in there about bugs and pests. I think the bird feeder idea was a great one and it should keep the squirrels busy as well. My bird feeders are shared by the birds and the squirrels. Good luck.
