Hello everyone! I have read these forums from time to time, but this is my first time posting. Unfortunately, my Redbud tree left me no choice!

We got the tree at the very end of September in 2006. It came from a local nursery and was about 5ft tall. The following spring it bloomed, but the blooms were not abundant like most of the Redbuds I see around town. It got leaves on most of it's branches, but there were some dead branches mixed in. I pruned them out and it seemed to be doing fine. I thought the lack of blooms might be just because it was it's first year after being transplanted.

This year it only has 6 buds on the entire tree. The leaves however are starting to come in and they are on every branch this year and it looks like there will be very little deadwood this year.

All I have given it, besides water, is a Miracle Grow tree spike (one in the spring & one in the fall) Can anyone give me advice on how to make sure it blooms next year?

Thanks,
Kristen

Hi Kristen, sorry I can't answer your question, but I'm sure somebody will be along with some suggestions, then hopefully I can get suggestions on mine also. I do have a Red Bud in my yard but, I have not done anything to it at all. Its really two trees twined together, but when the city hooked us up to their water, the city seemed to cut thru the roots and now half of the tree is dead.
Good luck anyway!

Hi sandkrab,

My advice would be to wait til next year to decide if there is a problem. I've transplanted quite a few trees in the last few years and some take a couple years to outgrow any difficulties they were having. The fact that yours did have a lot of dead wood means it was pretty sick, and that it is now putting out a lot of leaves says it is recovering nicely. It may simply need more time to 'rebuild it's strength' before putting on a show.

Mine get no maintenance. I trimmed them back out of my way for mowing and all info I find says they only need an occasional watering during hot dry periods.
They only show pink buds once for a short period of time then they leaf out and have some pods on them.
