I have many pets, and have always had success with raising/keeping/living with animals. I have 2 birds, 2 turtles, many fish, a rat, a rabbit, and a dog. They have the best of the best and flourish. My history with plants, however, is much more bleak. Every housplant I've tried to keep, has met a horrible fate of some sort. Drying out, over watered, blown away by the wind (sitting on the balcony), withering, yellowing, all possible bad conclusions have been met. I have been gifted 'hardy' plants. A mini rosebush, an orchid, a strawberry plant.. all of these ended badly. I'm not sure why. I've decided today.. while at the store.. that since it was spring.. I would focuse my energy and love and efforts into a new plant. I bought an extremely inexpensive small 4" plastic pot containing a "Ostica Purple Osteaospermum" a really cute daisy plant. Right now it's sitting outside in my yard on a table in the sun.. as I researched online and it said they do good in the sun. So far it has one bloomed flower, and about 6 tiny buds.. some already opening up. I am extremely hopefull that this will be my first plant success. I want to eventually be an avid gardener, but am starting slowly and hesitantly. Any offical or experienced tips are EXTREMELY appreciated. Right now.. I have it in the sun, still in it's small pot. I want to eventually get a bigger prettier pot and replant it. I am going to make sure to water it 'regularly'. (which I believe means.. don't let the soil get dry... make sure it's always moist to the touch?) Oh.. I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.. if that helps (weather.. climate.. environment wise) And as far as introduction.. My name is Anna. I love animals. I'm turning 25 later this year, and openly admit to being completely addicted to coffee, sugar, and the internets.

Welcome to GG from WI, Anna! I, too, am rarely without one of the three you mentioned, sometimes all three together... except my sugar is a bit more specific, being CHOCOLATE. Thank you for joining us, and although I'm not familiar with the plant you're specifically trying to grow, I'm sure someone here will chime in with advice soon! Just remember that if at first you don't succeed, plant another seed... ![]() PS It does sound as if you're doing everything right with this one, keep at it, and if you have the chance, post a picture so we can see it? Thanks again. |

Thankyou for the warm welcomes! I took a photo and decided that I will post it. Not the best quality, because I left my digital camera at my family's house a city away.. so this one is taken with my lappytop webcam. Still nice though. This is me and my flower.

Welcome Anna! Don't feel bad about your "brown thumb". (We actually have a member on here named "brownthumb".) Everyone of us at one time has had failures with plants, especially me! I had given up for a while on trying to grow anything after killing a cactus from underwatering (thought they didn't need much water). Anyways, we all have to start somewhere and the important thing is you are now reaching out for advice and you have certainly come to the right place. The internet is the perfect place to find out info on your little plant. As I am not anywhere near your zone, I'm afraid I don't have any advice either but someone will come along that has that plant. Glad to have you and good luck! |

Hello Anna, Welcome to GG from the shores of Lake Greenwood, SC. I'm also an animal lover as well as an avid gardener. I always have my three dogs following me around the yard as I work in my flower beds or the garden. My neighbor's dog stays with me all day in the yard until she's called home for supper. Also, I have one cat now named Sandy, my other cat passed this spring of old age. I have an 18 gallon fish aquarium and a yard usually full of Mallards & three white ducks that I purchased last year to put on the lake. Something happened to two of my white ducks but the other one survived & is hanging with two male Mallards that come to my deck or where ever I may be in the yard & let me know that it is feeding time for them. I can't wait to see what their ducklings look like. Last year a Mallard hen made her nest in my Dianthus bed near the lake. All of her eggs hatched but one was a late bloomer & was left in the nest. I took the duckling, placed it in a shallow tub of water so it could learn to swim, then put it with the mother duck when she came to eat. They all went back to the lake & swam away only to return at feeding time. You can check out my pets & yard on my profile page if you would care to. I have more pics to download but for some reason I'm having trouble with the loader at present. I'll keep trying until I get it to work for me. Well, I've rambled on enough & will say bye for now. Keep those hands dirty & minds creative, Gimlet |

Welcome, Anna. This is da place. There are many folks that can help you. All you have to do is ask the question. When you mentioned "osteaospermum," I thought I knew what you meant. Evidently not. Thanks for the picture. The one that I grew had a small yellow flower. Yours is huge. Lovely. I hope that this one will survive for you. It's a keeper! |
