I just bought a couple of Mandevilla and Bougainvillea and I don't really know what to do with them. We live in Texas so the summers are hot and dry and the winters are pretty mild. Should I plant them directly in the ground with a trellis for them to climb or do I need to be able to bring them inside in the winter (we have a sunroom)? Help! I am a realatively new gardener and am still trying to earn my "green thumb". |

The last mandevilla that I had, I planted it in a big pot so that I could bring it in. I was in Charlotte, North Carolina at the time, which is much the same weather conditions as to where I am now. By bringing it in in the winter, it lasted a few years before I killed it some other way. I can't quite remember now. |

I don't know where in Texas you are, but here in South Louisiana I have both. I have both in pots, the bougainvilla will take some drought (will actually bloom better), dies back in winter-I just bring inside and water sparingly. The mandevilla I will eventually plant in the ground. It is pretty hardy, but needs more water than bouganvilla. Both can be ground planted, just mulched real well in winter (if you are in zone 9 or 10) |

I am actually in zone 8. I am in a suburb just north of Dallas. |
