The back portion of my yard was wooded and very secluded when we first moved into our house 10 years ago. Over the years, the trees and shrubs have been dying off and becoming more sparse. What ever I seem to plant does not do well. I am looking for anything that will grow tall and wide with virtually no sun and sandy soil. Also our sprinkler system does not cover this area so it’s up to the rain. I live on Long Island. Need help - thanks. |

Hmmm, honeysuckles come to mind. Try to get the Trumpet honey suckle tho, it's a native with very pretty pinkish blooms from early spring to mid/late summer. If you're willing to drag a hose out there, many viburnums can get large and like the shade. They'd need watered until established, but then should do well. Witchazels also come to mind, they get pretty yellow blooms in the fall after the leaves drop- look for the Hamamelis virginiana it's native. Wait- not sure if it would like deep shade... Maybe someone else has some better ideas. I'll try looking around for you as well Melissa |

Thank you for the suggestions. The honeysuckle seems like a great idea. I will look into all your suggestions at my local nursery. Is there a good on-line site to buy plants at a reasonable price that anyone would recomend? |
