I have a corscrew willow that we planted about three years ago and it seems to like where it is as it gets lot of rain and all the run off from the rain in the spring. We also watered it a great deal the first year and last year during the drought. This spring it hasn't started putting out leaves yet and I am starting to worry. The bark close to the soil and for about 8 inches above the soil has a mass of greenery growing from the bark and the bark is cracked open in many different areas. I haven't noticed this before this year. The absence of leaves alone makes me wonder what is going on and I have searched the internet trying to find out what could be causing this problem. We specially ordered this tree from a local nursery because they didn't carry the trees here so I don't believe that anyone around here will be much help with telling us about the problem. Does anyone know what is the problem and what we need to do before we lose the tree? We would appreciate any help whatsoever.

Hey there, neighbor! I am just south of you by 30 miles or so and was up in your area yesterday (Sam's).
I have a curly willow and so do two other gardeners I know. In fact, one friend of mine has a whole huge stand and I could probably get you some cuttings to start new ones if I ask. That's how I started mine.
One of the friends is having the same trouble as you ~ no leaves except right at the bottom. At least this means the tree is not dead. She is blaming last year's drought and even though you watered, there may be several other problems happening at once. The splits in the bark may have allowed any number of pests in as well. If it were MY tree, I would get rid of the dead branches even though that sounds drastic ~ like I said, if you lose out, I can get you some cuttings. Also, you may want to gently loosen the soil around the base of the tree. Remove any plastic or other materials covering the root area, such as gravel or excess mulch.
My curly, although only about 4' tall (she's a baby yet) is fully leafed and looking good, so yours should be about the same (same zone, same weather, etc.). My weeping willow, however, looks bad. It has produced no new leaves this year and I am holding out just a bit longer. I also lost a tulip tree and several large (60') deciduous trees in our woods. Last year was a (insert expletive) and it will be a few years before all the damage is behind us. Hope this helps and WELCOME to GG from south Marshall!!

Did you get a good hard freeze this winter? It sounds like the branches froze. If you are getting green around the bottom it will come back.

Hi. I don't have an answer for you but I do hope that your curly willow starts to fill out soon!

I have a question for fellow curly willow lovers. Where on earth can I buy one??!! LOL...it doesn't seem that any of my local nurserys carry them (I stopped at another on my way home tonight!). I fell in love with the curly willow about 5 years ago, when I saw one at a friends house. Unfortunately they sold the house before I thought to get cuttings! If you have any ideas...I would appreciate it (e.g. mail order, etc.).

Thank you!

How many do you want? I can send you rooted cuttings in about month. I think I started about thirty of them this weekend. I need a few for a couple other people but there should be plenty to go around. I will post here when they are ready and you can pm me with your address.

BTW...when they are ready, please let me know how I can get $$ to you for shipping! I can paypal or send a check...whichever you prefer. Also, you said that you would PM me...I hope that I can figure out where to pick up a PM...LOL. I am a COMPLETE newbie on this site!! Hopefully one day I will be able to offer advice and help, rather than just asking questions :-)

Don't worry about postage. Just pay the favor forward to someone else some day. To get a pm go to the top of the page and see the tab that says "my profile". When you click on that it will tell you if you have any pm's waiting for you to read. If you do just click there and it will take you to your pm mail box.
