Backyard Privacy

My backyard privacy has been invaded and I need something to create a privacy hedge at least 10 feet high. I already have a 6ft. wooden fence, but the new neighbors have just built a "monstrosity trellis" that stands 4ft. above our wooden fence and spans 40 ft. long. It is only 6in. from the fence and it is all that we see when we look into our backyard. We have considered clumping Bamboo, Aborvitae, Nellie Stevens Hollies, or just planting trees. We already have a stand of Silverberry shrubs, but they are only about 5 ft tall so far. We would welcome any suggestions. I have attached a picture. Attachments: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

No doubt they plan to grow something on that trellis? |

It looks like they are, although they are now hanging plastic humming bird feeders and various plastic decorations on it. |

Oh, my! That's going to be difficult to hide. I can't think of anything. |

But it's probably going to be covered in clematis and roses! I think it'll look nice once the vines fill in. Maybe you should ask them what their plans are so you can do some companion planting. Maybe they're planting every other panel and you could stagger your evergreens so they don't make a solid wall along your fence. The vines are going to grow near your fence anyway so why block them?

I'm not really sure how a trellis with flowers &/or greens growing on it could be any worse to look at than the suburban monstrosity on the other side of it. It seems like once it fills in it would actually create more privacy for both of you and block the view of your neighbors scrambling eggs in the morning. |

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the optimism!

We are thinking of going with either Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae or Nellie Stevens Holly. We have two huge oak trees in one corner of the yard too. Should we plant close to the trees or go around them? They are about 15 feet apart and one is about 16 feet from the corner of the yard, both are right at the fence. |

Do privets grow in Georgia? They are common living fences on Long Island where I grew up and can grow 8-10' tall in the right circumstances. Not real rapid growers however. I'm for hoping your neighbors are growing something nice on the trellis, but if anything like my MIL with the plastic ornaments, I'll keep my fingers crossed!! |

Yes, the privets are common around here, but I want something that will grow at least 10 ft. We have lots of family in upstate NY, it sure is beautiful in the summer, (only season I have been there). |
