I'm determined to grow pumpkins and cantaloupes this year, in containers and by trellising them haha! Does anyone have experience with growing either plant and using a trellis for support? I've googled and googled and came up with a few tips (using pantyhose to sling the fruits), but haven't really found too much trellis info. I've thought of using an old ladder I have, not sure how that would work...

Thanks for your help

You need to make sure that trellis is sturdy and well supported. Once you get the weight of the plants plus the fruit on it, that makes a big difference. You could probably use the stepladder if you brace it very well. And yes, old knee highs and pantyhose make great slings! You can't grow the big pumpkins and melons on trellis, but the smaller one's do very well.

yes you can do it but support could be problematic. keeping the fruit supported will be a challenge since those crops are very heavy. it's possible but those fruits like to sprall out in the garden in which case the weight of the fruit isn't a problem.

they are easily trainable to trellis though. I've trellised them just enough to keep them from taking over the garden (made them grow up then down the other side of trellis and fruit on or near ground. I only tried it one year and didn't have enough growing season to get a crop.

so it's possible but might be hard.

good luck and tell us how it turns out.

Thanks for the replies My seedlings should be ready to be moved to their new homes within a week or two...haven't decided how it's going to work yet, but will post lots of pics.
