That is really a good question. I don't think I have ever seen them on the ground either. Might be a good question on a birding site. Linda B |

I'm guess that it is a learned behavoir just like the babies that learned to eat off the feeder because the parent taught them that. We watched one yesterday. He flew to the tree trunk and sat there. He eyes the feeder and then looked at the ground. He'd look up, and then look down as if he were thinking, "It sure would be easier to get these seeds off the ground than to fly up, get a seed, and then fly back up into the tree to crack it before eating." He decided to fly down and eat off the ground. There he was hopping around with a thrush, a few cardinals, some goldfinches, and some bird I wasn't quite sure what it was. |
