Don't know about the leaves but the seed head looks like something we called "itchy powder" as kids. |

I was going to suggest it might be Platanus x acerifolia, London Planetree, but my reference book says it has 2 fruit balls per stalk & yours shows only one, as is described for Platanus occidentalis, American Sycamore. The bark on your trunk doesn't look as blotchy as most P. occidentalis seem to be. But it could be! Leaves are described as 4-8" long & wide; shaped like maple leaves but wider & with shallower lobes; turn brown in the fall. They seem quite variable from the pix I've seen. |

The pic was of American Sycamore. As Joy said as kids we used to crush the balls and put the powder down other kids shirts. We called it Itchy Ball in our area. |

Okay thanks ya'll I think it is as Rosemariero said "variable" the leaves do get very big before falling. Very beautiful color changes in the Fall the pic below is the best I can get of the two that show my driveway entrance. Attachments: ![]() |

Hi, divya from Maryland. I'm new to this blog and in a landscape design program in Washington DC. My horticulture teacher says sycamores tend to begin their bark exfoliation higher up on the tree, whereas London planetrees start their mottling at the base of the trunk. So, yeah. Platanus occidentalis. Native to the Potomac riverbanks here. I look forward to learning and sharing a whole lot in this community. Attachments: ![]() ![]() |

Well T2B, it seems we did similar things as kids . We had a tree with those itchy powder things in the grounds of one of the schools I attended. It was mostly boys who had them shoved down the backs of their shirts .
