I recently read a snippet about it, and it sounded rather interesting.

We learned about it in master gardener training. There are some excellent references to the practice by googling Pat Lanza (the author), or "Kid's Gardening.com".
There was a lady in our class who uses this system as part of her restoring an historical farmhouse kitchen garden. When I visited there last week, her beds were in various stages of completion. That is, she had new ones, fairly new ones, and some that had been in for several years. It was amazing to me how black and friable the soil was in her beds. She makes great use of newspapers (no slick ads), cardboard she gleans from businesses around town, and garden green waste plus oat straw.
If you want more information, try the resources.
