I see lots of Northern Cardinals from the kitchen window.

Hey, who put corn in the safflower seed?

The cardinal is such a beautiful bird. We got lucky this spring because a cardinal couple is building a nest in one of our small evergreen trees. I have never seen cardinal babies before.

Great picture! Did you take that? We have more cardinals than we can count. They nest all over the place--even in the Carolina jasmine.

Must be nice to have more cardinals than you can count. We see only a couple pairs each year. The only birds in my yard that are too numerous to count are sparrows, starlings, and grackles.

I like bird-watching and I have six feeders in my yard. I bought my first digital camera recently and I’ve been trying to get some decent photos. Thanks for the encouragement! Here is a picture from January of a healthy pair of cardinals.

Nice picture, noroom.

That's a shame, Hawkeye. We have all kinds of birds. I used to have a list somewhere. I guess I need to make out another one and perhaps post it. We have four feeders, three thistle socks, and 3 hummer feeders. We see to do quite well. I remember a time when we first moved here in the woods that we didn't have any. Then when we started all our flower beds (I'll have to list those too sometime), we really got the birds. The flowers and the shrubs gave them a feeling of safety and here they came. They eat us out of bin and barn.

Dangit... I was happy to finally get cardinals building a nest in one of my small trees again. A few days ago I checked the nest and saw one egg. Unfortunately, today was the fourth day in a row in which I did not see any female cardinal in the yard, so I figured something was wrong. I just checked the nest again and there was still only one egg and it was broken into. This was the second time I've ever had cardinals nesting in my yard (first was several years ago), and both times they laid only one egg and abandoned the nest. The first time the egg was broken into as well. What's the deal? Is this normal behavior for cardinals to either not protect the nest or just decide to pick up and leave after laying an egg? All the other bird nests we get here (sparrow, robin, etc) are always protected well and successfully produce young birds.

Oh, how sad. I don't know if that is their behavior or not. From the plethora that we have, it doesn't seem to be happening around here.

Hawkeye,

Are you sure that it was a Cardinal egg? Do you have any Cowbirds in your area? They lay eggs in other birds nests.

It was definitely a cardinal egg. I haven't seen a cowbird in years.
