Making a new garden

I have a project in mind and would love some suggestions!! i am putting in a flower garden at my trailer, the ground is a combo of sand and clay (i am going to turn some black earth into it) it is approx 15ft long by 4ft deep (wide) at the one end i have my shed i am going to use fishing line to make a netting up the side of the shed and plant morning glories there, the spot gets terrific late morning full afternoon sun, i have 2 'fairy' rose bushes i am going to plant there, but was hoping for some suggestions as to what to use to make it very full, i do like ornamental grasses, my favorite color is pink I'd prefer something that will bloom from spring to fall or partially, i have about a dozen or so fairy statues of medium size and one 'waterfall' approx 4ft high so hit me with some ideas please forgot to add i have quite a few pieces of driftwood for it as well also forgot we get lots of humming birds up there and would like some flower for them... there i think i finally remembered everything lol thanks everyone Quote \| Reply \| Report

CarolineC Joined: 7/14/2007 Location: SE Pennsylvania zone 6b Posts: 301	Posted: Apr/10/2008 3:01 AM PST Well, I guess since you have such a narrow area to work with, I guess the obvious thing would be to have the tallest plants closest to the trailer, descending to the shortest. Since you like pink so much, perhaps you could have one or a few sections of "pinks" like purple/mauve pinks, red pinks, hot pink pinks, etc. Good pink flowers -- peonies, roses and there are pinks in a lot of flowers that have a whole range of colors dahlias, zinnias, cosmos (annuals), carnations, balloon flowers, pansies, columbine, astilbe. The only flowers that I can think of that flower from spring through fall are annuals. Plants that flower through fall (but not in the spring) -- chrysanthemums, cyclamen, sedum, and roses. I'm sure there are more, but right off the top of my head, those are what I can think of. Having some nice clumps of ornamental grasses or foliage plants--hosta, coral bells can help anchor the colors. Just a few brainstorm ideas to bounce around. Quote \| Reply \| Report

On "You Bet Your Garden" Mike McGrath said that if you want to attract butterflies, you should plant three things, "butterfly bush, butterfly bush and butterfly bush." We have butterfly bushes here, and the butterflies are always out and about once it starts blooming. Quote \| Reply \| Report
