Looking for a climber in a southeast corner, not sure just how much shade, but hostas and impatiens like it there. There are trees above - on top the 12' rock wall. Zone 5a, by the way.

What climbers should I try? Clematis? Honeysuckle? morning glory?
If it doesn't bloom as much, that would be ok, but I don't want to wait 5 years for it to get to the top of my trellis.

If it gets down to it, I just might try virginia creeper, but it's in my flower bed, and I don't want it to take over my other plants. I'm also hesitant to try something too shrubby, in case the roots take the water from all my other plants.

Last year I put a passion flower there in the middle of summer. It was a little spindly and was trying to go toward the sun, but it still put on alot of growth and had about 7 blooms -not bad for that time of year.
Unfortunately, though it said zone 5 on the package, I doubt it will come back.

Sorry for the ridiculously long post.
Thanks,
Joyce

(I'm putting a trellis at the corner of my house and rock wall. The rock wall ends at my house, so the retaining wall behind the house is poured concrete -ugly. It is just a 2 foot gap between the house and the wall.)

Welcome Joyce! I used to be a zone 5 and had a need for shade vines too. I think clematis may be a good way to go. Mine was on the north side of the house and only got a little bit of morning sun. It was beautiful ~ small baby blue double blooms ~ not your typical purple variety. Just make sure to give it some root protection ~ they like their "feet" covered. I put several big stones at the base.
My other shade vine is a climbing hydrangea, but now they won't take off quickly for you. Slow to start, but can then become large and in need of serious support.
Hope this helps!

I am glad you asked that question, Joyce. I was getting ready to ask the same thing. I want something that will grow kinda quickly......would love an annual vine. Will Moonflower grow in the shade?

Clematis is nice. However you may want to consider jasmine. It's a bit 'heavier' and flowers much more prolifically. I have a trellis with both, and the jasmine is much faster growing, and I think better looking. Mine get full morning sun, then shade most of the rest of the day.

How about the trumpet vine?

I thought clematis liked more sun? I have tried to grow two in my back yard on the west side of a shed - only get midday sun - I got wilt, the other met my husband last spring (know how they can look kinda dead? he thought it was and ripped it off the trellis trying to 'clean up'). I will try them again there if they do ok in shade. I also have bittersweet covering an ugly chain link fence - it will grow rapidly once established, be sure to get several female and at least one male plant for berries.

DonB,
Does jasmine grow in zone 5? I really appreciate the comparison between your clematis and jasmine. I'm barely in zone 5, but with the shelter of my house that spot could be warmer.
Also, I've seen some honeysuckle for sale around here. Anyone know if it will take over my flowerbed, or how fast growing it is?

I've had Akebia Quinata (Chocolate vine) recommended as well. Any experience with that one?
Thanks everyone for all the responses so far.

I was going to recommend akebia but I've heard it's invasive in the south and wasn't sure about IA. I think it spreads by seed, but not all get seed pods. It can grow 20-30 feet in a season, so that sounds like it meets your needs. You can trim it back in fall to control its growth.

I have one called Silverbells...silver something. It's in a large cedar planter on my deck. It covers the trellis every summer. They bloom in April here with tiny vanilla or chocolate scented flowers. There are pink and white flowered ones. Mine is white with purple stripes and here it's semi-evergreen most of the winter. The foliage is nice because it has an Asian look to it. The foliage is the attraction, not the flowers. It'd look nice with a type 3 clematis growing through it to give you some summer color.

Stay away from the trumpet creeper, trust me. It can become VERY invasive. I inherited a bunch of it and am always pulling new plants from everywhere.
Same with the honeysuckle, unless it's a native one. The Japanese, Amur, and a few others are incredibly invasive as well (will choke out everything and kill trees).
You could also try a cross vine. They are beautiful (more so than trumpet creeper and honeysuckle).

I have a spot that I want a climbing vine that receives the afternoon sun, and am leaning toward the cross vine or Jessamine.

I purchased two Cardinal Climbers today (ipomoea x multifada) for a trellis in part shade. However, I am in zone 7a so I don't know about your zone. It is suppose to do well in part shade though so you might want to look into it. Supposedly this vine can grown an inch a day!
