I'm new to this group, and I have a question about a tree in our front yard. When things started to grow this spring (we moved into the house in early fall, so it's our first spring here), the area around the tree was growing in really weirdly. Then, when I tried mowing the lawn, the lawnmower got kind of stuck on something near there, and I realized that there used to be landscaping around the tree. Thanks to a long time digging around the tree and weed-whacking, I've found that there are actually white decorative rocks surrounding this area. Quite a few of them are buried pretty deep though - the grass had grown over them and I'm sure if I leave them, the grass will grow over them again.

Should I buy some new dirt from a lawn and garden store to put under the rocks and try to raise them all the same level? And then add mulch to the interior of the circle formed by these rocks?

I've never done any gardening before, so I would really appreciate any ideas on what I can do to clean this area up.

Thanks!

I think you should go for the long-term solution, which would be to pull those rocks up. Are you planning on planting around the tree? You could add some groundcovers that do well in dry shade and use the rocks as a border at the drip line of the tree.

Yeah, that's what I was leaning towards. I called a landscaping place to get a quote, and they suggested leaving the rocks in, but it just didn't seem like it would be super healthy for our lawn.

Thanks!
