I used a very old charcoal grill for several years. I just took a piece of screen and put it over the grate and secured it so it wouldn't flop off. The birds loved it. Cardinals like an open feeder.

Not fancy RNBF but is works. Linda B

Wow, wolf- I love the Cardinal close-up! Looks like you have something fore everyone! I need to get an open feeder going. I see Cardinals occasionally on the ground picking up after the messy feeders. I have a shallow pot bottom that has its own stand, that might do the trick.

Great pictures. I can't get cardinals to stay around my yard. I will try to make a flat feeder, sure I have some thing around here. You must spend a fortune on seed.

Great idea using a plate for a bird feeder. Only the finches seem to like my hung feeder that moves when they land on it. Now i just need to figure out what to put the plate on so that the neighborhood cats cant get to the birds.

Has to be on something they cant climb up on. Maybe a greased pole?

Tura , If you look at some of the pics i posted on bird watching you can see the hardware cloth i covered the dish with . keeps out chipmunks and the doves cant steal the food as fast.lol
