I am in an online gardening swap and I've been partnered with someone who lives in Alaska. Can you help me with what I should by for that climate? What would you like to receive if you are from Alaska or a Zone 3 climate? Ideas needed. Thanks in Advance. |

HI, I just joined but I live in Alaska, in the Fairbanks area. One GREAT source of information about what will grow here is the Sunset Western Garden book. I have been a gardener all my life and grew up in the Mojave Desert of southern California. (Zone 11 in the SWG Book). Now I am in zone A-1, the most extreme of all the zones and believe it or not there is a TON of things you can grow up here. Apples, Oaks, Lilacs, Grapes(!) - yes those too. Flowers especially annuals go nuts up here in the 24 hour sun of summer. I grow so much it amazes my friends and inspires them to try things that some of the old timers never gave any thought about. Sunset just added Alaska a few years ago, before that I would have referred to zone 1 or 2 at best. The thing up here is that it is a short yet VERY intense season. Only about 100 days between killing frost, but what a 100 days it is. I have also just started a weekly newsletter that spans the world, not just Alaska. I have great resources, photos, videos and interviews with people from across the U.S. even Hawaii, and Australia so far. Check it out at www.goldmineview.com - thats the sign up page. I am updating weekly and if anyone has specific questions I take all kinds. If I don't know, I will find the answer or the resource for you a.s.a.p. Hope this helps, and b.t.w; the newsletter is Free! keith |
