I planted herbs around my rose two summers ago, more for appearance than culinary. I had marjoram, garlic chives, salad burnett, summer savory, oregano, and thyme. The only one I used frequently enough to warrant devoting garden space to it was the thyme. The thyme is evergreen and it's in the ground, so I always have fresh thyme. I love thyme as ornamentals too--I have 8 different kind! |

Basil gets the most use in my kitchen. It's easy to grow, and you can use it in Italian, French and Asian cuisine. Also grow chives for salads, potatoes and soups; cilantro for Mexican dishes, salads and Thai food; mint for Asian, desserts and drinks; and parsley for many savory dishes. All of these are easy growers. Good luck! |

I grow about 50 different herbs (used to be over 100 but have cut back!!). The ones that get the most use in my kitchen are basil (several types), parsley, chives, thyme, oregano, lovage, rosemary, cilantro, and mint (for tea). But that's just really basic. I could go on and on. So much depends on what kind of foods you like to cook/eat. A good place to start is to look at your favorite recipes and see what herbs are called for and then plant those. Good luck. |

Thyme is a must...I use that all the time. You should try red basil, I'm planting some this year. Just be careful with the mint...as in put it in a separate container. It'll take over the pot you plant it in pretty quickly I hear. and don't put it in the ground unless you want a headache, or loooads of tea. |
