Hello Everyone... My name is Abby and I work for an elementary afterschool program... So as one of our activities I want to start a garden with the kids... We have been given a space to do it at.. but I don't know how to go about in planning or what to do to the ground to start it. I would appreciate any help or any ideas... I don't have a green thumb.. so I don't know where to begin... Any ideas or suggestions would be wonderful... Thank You!!! Abby |

Hi Abby. Do you want to start a vegetable garden or a flower garden? Is the after-school program year-round? (I have a friend that teaches in Vallejo so I think they are on year-round school.) How much space do you have and does it get full sun? |

Welcome to GG Abby, you sure came to the right place to get help in your garden. I am sure you will get so many suggestions you will have a hard time picking the ones you like. Good luck and hope to see some pictures. |

What a cool idea! I think I would try to mix it up with both edibles, decoratives, & aromatics. You will have such a varied mix of kids that you never know what will spark their imagination. For some it is the smell or taste of mint, for others it is delivering a just-ripe tomato, bursting with pride, to their family table. For others it is a sunflower, some daisies or purple coneflowers that captures their imagination and hearts. I would call all the area nurseries as their advice will be invaluable for dirt preparation. You really want these kids to have a win right out of the gate. I would be surprised if you didn't get some expert input and even some free plants to get it going. Engage with the nursery and I think you will realize why gardeners are so dang cool. They really are fired up to help others learn how to be successful. I can see a slide show assembly, with sponsorship mentioned for all the parents and PTA, and some really proud kids presenting (at least photos of) their bounty. One of our local high schools even sells the plants for a fund raiser! BEST of luck, and keep us posted on your progress! You might consider a blog here that the kids to write for? i am a new gardener too. the local home depot gave me a tip on conditioning soil. she told me to water the soil with a little bit of dishwashing soap. this will condition hard packed ground to become soft soil. i am growing strong weedy plants, so i don't know how difficult it will be to grow. i bought a cdrom plant encyclopedia to limit my choices. |

i don't have any experience with planting from seeds. but i will soon start. i read that seeds should be planted in little pots before going outside. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie =UTF-8&rls=HPID,HPID:2007-47,HPID:en&q=how+to+plan t+seed |
