I was thrilled when I won an auction on Ebay for a Meyer Lemon Tree. But when it arrived, it had been poorly packaged and was almost dead. I was able to get it revived but in no time, found it had scale. That was three years ago. It's a constant battle trying to control the scale. Since we want to eat the lemons the tree produces (2 this winter), I don't want to use the insecticides that are recommended. Does anyone know of a safe way to eliminate scale short of continually washing it off (which is only minimally effective)? Local nursery people tell me to throw the tree out and start over!!!!

Hi,

I remember one time, instead of going to the nursery for advice, I tried several remedies to resolve the scale. None of it was working, I had even resorted to the tedious task of taking rubbing alcohol & Que-Tips and picking them off one by one.....which I don't recommend unless you have A LOT of spare time (and Que-Tips)......I don't remember where I heard this from but I was desperate by this time.....

You are much better off using a light horticulture oil, not the dormant variety because you may have to spray more than once (it works by smothering the scale). You will know that it is working when they start to scale off on their own and/or by the touch.

Good Luck :~)
